Join GeoBus for an exciting day of CLPL for secondary environmental science and biology teachers.
See how you can run practical fieldwork to investigate zonation on the rocky shore with your students and also how to collect data to compare the diversity index of different seashore zones.
Skills will include quantitative techniques for sampling plants and animals along a transect moving up the shore. Working in teams, you will also carry out random sampling to collect data on invertebrates in the lower, middle and upper zones. These data will then be used to calculate Simpson’s Biodiversity Index.
After the course, teachers will have access to the digital resources used and will have the opportunity to borrow some equipment to use with their students.
Curriculum Links addressed in this course:
Fieldwork skills and techniques will be linked to National 5 and Higher and environmental science specification requirements, particularly in relation to the Living Environment and Investigating Ecosystems & Biodiversity section of the course. The fieldwork will also support the requirements of the National 5 and Advanced Higher biology course specifications, particularly in relation to the Biology: life on Earth section of the National 5 course and the Organisms and evolution (1. Field techniques for biologists) section of the Advanced Higher course.
